Three typical Dutch foods to try

Updated: Jun 27, 2019

Amsterdam, a city full of art, beauty, food, history, liberal freedom, weed, etc. There is a list of good foods in Amsterdam but they are not typically Dutch and then there are the ones that are typically Dutch. These three are just a few of the typical Dutch foods tourist must try.

Bitterballen:

Little fried balls with a meat mixture inside, maybe not the healthiest, maybe not the most convenient thing for vegetarian but it sure is good. You can find bitterballen at almost any bar/restaurant in town. It is a perfect snack to have after a working day like at 17:00 with a Heineken beer before dinner.

Herring:

Not everyone likes fish or this type of “raw fish” but if you are a seafood lover then this is worth a try. Best eaten in a bread roll with onions and pickles. These are most commonly seen being sold on the streets of Amsterdam but can also be found in fish shops.

Stroopwafel:

Two cookies with a caramel filling in the middle, the most addictive thing I think I have ever heard of. When I first moved to Amsterdam this was the thing I was in love with. I could not stop eating it and I think many people might understand my obsession. It is really nice to place your stroopwafel on top of a warm cup of tea and let the caramel melt a little, eat it and enjoy the cup of tea.
